Training Requirements for CERT Members
The following are the basic training requirements that need to be taken as soon as you become a member of CERT. NOTE: All the required training is FREE for members of CERT.
1. Take Basic CERT Training class.
The program consists of 8 sessions of 3 hours each plus a drill. Some of the training that you will be getting is as follows: disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact your area, basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. 2. Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS) training
CERT members are required to apply basic Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS) vocabulary to actual events and practice exercises. This vocabulary is currently being integrated utilized by all emergency responders. By knowing and understanding this language CERT, police, fire, etc can easily communicate with one another and understand one another.
It is vital that each CERT member take, at a minimum, these three FEMA Independent Study courses. The three required courses are:
IS-100.b (ICS 100) Introduction to Incident Command System
IS-700.a (NIMS) Introduction to National Incident Management System
IS-800.b (NRF) Introduction to National Response Framework
Completing this required course work is simple.
First, click on 'downloads for classroom' to download the course textbook. This link can be found on the far right hand side in a box titled 'Additional Resources'
Second, click on 'download the final exam questions'. This link can be found on the far right hand side in a box titled 'Take This Exam'.
Third, after reading the text and answering all of the questions on the final exam, you are now ready to take the final exam. When ready to take the exam click on 'take final exam' which is located on the far right in a box titled 'Take this Exam'.
3. Register on OHIO RESPONDS
All CERT members are required to be registered on Ohio Responds. To register: go to http://www.ohioresponds.gov/ and click on register now. If you are already registered, click on register now button and then log in with you user name and password.
